Introduction
The programmable room thermostat RT510BC is both a programmer and a room thermostat. A programmer allows you to set ‘On’ and ‘Off’ time periods to suit your own lifestyle. A room thermostat works by sensing the air temperature, switching on the heating when the air temperature falls below the thermostat setting and switching it off once this set temperature has been reached.
So, a programmable room thermostat lets you choose what times you want the heating to be on, and what temperature it should reach while it is on.
It will allow you to select different temperatures in your home at different times of the day (and days of the week) to meet your particular needs.
Turning a programmable room thermostat to a higher setting will not make the room heat up any faster. How quickly the room heats up depends on the design of the heating system, for example, the size of boiler and radiators. Neither does the setting affect how quickly the room cools down. Turning a programmable room thermostat to a lower setting will result in the room being controlled at a lower temperature, and saves energy.
The way to set and use your programmable room thermostat is to find the lowest temperature settings that you are comfortable with at the different times you have chosen, and then leave it alone to do its job. The best way to do this is to set low temperatures first, say 18°C, and then turn them up by one degree each day until you are comfortable with the temperatures. You won’t have to adjust the thermostat further. Any adjustments above these settings will waste energy and cost you more money.
If your heating system is a boiler with radiators, there will usually be only one programmable room thermostat to control the whole house. But you can have different temperatures in individual rooms by installing thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) on individual radiators.
If you don’t have TRVs, you should choose a temperature that is reasonable for the whole house. If you do have TRVs, you can choose a slightly higher setting to make sure that even the coldest room is comfortable, then prevent any overheating in other rooms by adjusting the TRVs.
The time on the programmer must be correct. Some types have to be adjusted in spring and autumn at the changes between Greenwich Mean Time and British Summer Time. You may be able to temporarily adjust the heating programme, for example, ‘Temporary / Permanent Override’ or ‘Boost’. All these functions are explained in the following pages of the Instructions Manual.
Programmable room thermostats need a free flow of air to sense the temperature, so they must not be covered by curtains or blocked by furniture. Nearby electric fires, televisions, wall or table lamps may prevent the thermostat from working properly.

DIP Switch Settings
The DIP switches are found on the rear of your thermostat and can be used to change the span (temperature accuracy) of your thermostat from the default +/-0.5°C to +/-0.25°C and the programmes 5-2 or 24h. Changing the Span DIP Switch (2) may cause your boiler to operate more frequently. The DIP switches are located on the back of the thermostat.

Functions
Review the Setpoint temperature
When no button is pressed, your thermostat is showing the actual temperature of the room. To review the setpoint (desired) temperature follow the steps below:
Temporary Override
When the temporary override is active, the setpoint temperature will be changed until the next program starts.
Note: To exit the temporary override procedure, you can wait for 3 seconds until the set temperature stops flashing or you can press on the SET button once.
Permanent Override
Note: To exit the temporary override procedure, you can wait for 3 seconds until the set temperature stops flashing or you can press on the SET button once.
Boost Function
Boost function can be activated when your thermostat is in Normal Mode, in Temporary or Permanent Override. You cannot set the Boost when in Frost or Holiday Mode. With Boost mode activated you can override, temporary override or permanently override the thermostat by setting the period of time and also by changing the Setpoint temperature.
See below the explanations for the Boost Mode settings that are available for each of the modes set on the thermostat. Please follow the one that suits you needs:
Boost Function in Normal Mode
Note: RT510BC will work in Boost Mode for up to 9 hours, set on the desired temperature. After the Boost time is over, the thermostat will return to Normal Mode and will follow the schedule created by you.
Boost Function in Permanent Override Mode
Note: RT510BC will work in Boost Mode for up to 9 hours, set on the desired temperature. After the Boost time is over, the thermostat will return to the Permanent Override Mode.
Boost Function in Temporary Override Mode
Note: RT510BC will work in Boost Mode for up to 9 hours, set on the desired temperature. After the Boost time is over, the thermostat will return to Normal Mode, following the schedule set by you.
Boost Function in Frost/Holiday Mode
Note: When Frost/Holiday Mode are activated, the Boost function will be canceled. Also, you cannot activate the Boost function when the thermostat is set in Frost or Holiday Mode.
Frost Function
Frost function allows you to turn the Frost protection ON or OFF. The frost setpoint temperature is preset at 5°C. You can change the frost setpoint temperature by modifying the Installer Mode parameters, d03. If the room temperature is lower than the Frost setpoint then the thermostat will automatically change to Frost mode ON. Follow the steps below for setting up the Frost Mode.
Holiday Function
Holiday function will turn off the relay, blocking your thermostat from sending any call for heat. If room temperature is lower than the frost setpoint, then Frost Mode will be activated.
Follow the steps below in order to set the Holiday Mode.
Other Functions
Backlight
The backlight of the RT510BC is switched on automatically whenever any of the keys are pressed. The backlight will remain illuminated for approximately 5 seconds after the last key press, except if you are changing settings within the Clock, Programme or Temporary Override modes. In this case, the backlight will remain illuminated throughout the setting change process. The backlight will not illuminate if the RT510BC battery is low.
Battery Status
The RT510BC checks the battery voltage frequently during normal operation. If the battery voltage is sensed as being low (this is normally when the battery voltage falls to a level of around 2.6V), the low battery indicator will be displayed on the screen. You should replace the batteries as soon as possible to prevent any possible operating problems. When you want to change the batteries your device will use the internal memory to backup your settings. You have 30 sec to change the batteries before losing your settings.
Sleep Mode
By pressing both the UP and DOWN keys together, the RT510BC will enter SLEEP mode. In this mode, all the RT510BC functions will be paused to save battery power, with the exception of the clock which will continue to run in the background.
While in SLEEP mode:
- The LCD display will be blank.
- All output from the Control Unit will be turned off immediately. Press any key to wake up the RT510BC and cancel SLEEP mode.
Reset Function
The Reset Button is provided as a way to restore the programmable thermostat to its default factory settings. Pressing this button will delete any previously entered settings. This should only be done by your installer.
